After topping YouTube’s Trending chart earlier this week with Respect, emerging dancehall artist Lyriii previews a new single. On Thursday, Lyriii teased his upcoming song, which appears to be titled Understand. In this new track, the young artist sticks to the same playboy, or ‘gyalis,’ theme that Respect has.
The preview was shared on his Instagram page, showing him deejaying and tracking while vibing with an adult. Understand was produced by Chuck Starr with a collaborative effort from Cash Code Records.
The clip features Lyriii, who is only 15 years old, bragging about his popularity with women, one of whom expressed her desire to have his children. He adds that the female has a partner, indicating “gyal wicked.” The teen boasts that he has “gyal fi kill” and adds the infamous dunce slang in his song, saying, “mi dunce and mi deven pass GSAT.”
In the comments of the post, many fans mostly praised his song. One viewer expressed that his talent at 15 surpassed others older than him. Another Instagram user said, “Ratid, outa space him gone ino.”
A different Instagram user encouraged him, saying, “U bad still but i hope you find that song that stick bro NO STYLING BUT IF U WAH TAKE IT AS A STYLE I’M 27 SO I WOULDN’T STYLE U..cause keep dropping bombs like that often it’s not really safe for everyone but den again u can tel me my opinion nuh count n me dis n dat but then a.”
On the flip side, a few negative comments criticised his fashion for wearing his pants low and for pursuing a career as a dancehall artist. ”Pull up yuh pants youth smh kids are losing their way this is not a good sign smh,” one critic said.
Lyriii has received some criticism for the adult topics that his trending song Respect includes, but he has mostly gotten support for his musical talent.
Respect rose to No. 1 on YouTube on Tuesday and has since maintained the top position. The song was released with visuals on February 21 and has since amassed over 744,000 views with more than 39,000 likes. Respect, produced by Chuck Starr and Countre Hype, is the only song uploaded on Lyriii’s channel, which currently boasts over 24,000 subscribers.
