The 16-year-old student who is featured in a viral video with a 33-year-old Mathematics teacher has become a celebrity at school. The teen, Tinashe Chigumbu, was greeted by excited students when he went to school after the video leaked online.
The incident has garnered global attention, with many criticising the pair. Meanwhile, in Zimbabwe, where Tinashe attended secondary school, he garnered support from his peers. A video is circulating of his schoolmates surrounding him as soon as he set foot onto the school compound in his uniform and a sweater. The students are seen cheering, hugging him, and taking selfies with him.
The video also garnered criticism, as many expressed concern that the students did not understand the severity of the incident. Tinashe appeared happy as he received the warm welcome. He posted the video on social media and expressed gratitude to his schoolmates. “I appreciate the love and support that comes from you guys,” he wrote in the caption.
Tinashe claims he was coerced into having sex with the teacher, who allegedly threatened him and promised to take him abroad if he kept their inappropriate interaction a secret. He claimed she locked him inside a bedroom, restrained him by tying his hands, and then assaulted him.
Meanwhile, Makedenge alleges that the teen initiated the sexual interaction when he came for extra lessons in algebra. Makedenge even said she shouted for help, but she did not receive assistance. After police became aware of the August incident, Makedenge was arrested and appeared in court in Harare, Zimbabwe, on December 2, when the trial began.
An additional report says that the incident happened at a house where the teacher, who is based in the United States, was visiting a boyfriend at a residence in Glen View, Harare. The boyfriend is allegedly a tenant at the residence, where Tinashe also reportedly lives. However, information was not confirmed by officials.
