A 16-year-old boy was shot in a bizarre early-morning incident in Kingston. What has been pieced together so far suggests the teenager had been out with friends during the early hours of Wednesday when things took an unexpected turn.
Sometime around 3:00 a.m., the group was walking along McIntosh Drive when they reportedly ran into a pack of aggressive stray dogs, according to TVJ News. Fearing that he would be bitten, the teen tried to defend himself by throwing stones to keep them away.
Moments later, a confrontation ensued with a separate group of men in the area. The nature of the altercation is unclear, and it has not been confirmed whether it is connected to the incident with the dogs. The report says the student was arguing with one of the men.
The situation escalated to violence when a second man allegedly approached the student and brandished a gun. He discharged his weapon, leaving the 16-year-old nursing a gunshot wound.
A taxi operator became aware of the injured teenager and transported him to the hospital, where he remains under medical care. TVJ News confirmed that the shot he sustained was to the neck, but his current condition is unclear.
Following news of the incident, locals responded with concern, support, and hope that the teen will make a full recovery. Amid the responses is also confusion over the sequence of events and why anyone would resort to such barbaric measures. The timing also raised eyebrows. Several commenters pointed out the late hour, questioning why a 16-year-old would be out at that time of morning, while others pushed back, arguing that the focus should remain on the use of violence.
One reaction summed up that sentiment: “It’s not about the time — the real issue is why somebody would pull a gun in the first place.”
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
