A young man suspected of multiple violent crimes was shot and killed during a police operation in Farm Heights, St James, on Tuesday night. The deceased is 20-year-old Romario Ferguson, also known as ‘JT’.
Ferguson had been on the police’s radar for some time, as he was being investigated in connection with a series of violent crimes across the parish. The string of crimes included multiple murders, shootings, and robberies, according to a news report.
A local news report stated that Ferguson’s death occurred around 10 p.m. when law enforcement officers reportedly went to Eagle Drive searching for him. He was believed to be carrying a firearm at the time. According to the police, he fired at the team when he was approached. This reportedly prompted officers to return fire. The alleged shootout ended with Ferguson being killed by officers and his alleged weapon, a 9mm pistol, along with ammunition, being seized.
The report says that Ferguson was previously arrested for murder. He met his own demise while he was out on bail. Investigators also linked him to four additional murders in the area.
His death comes amid growing concern about the rising number of fatal police shootings this year. In February, the human rights organisation Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) pointed to a sharp increase, reporting 50 police-related killings up to February 24, compared to just 19 during the same period last year. JFJ called for urgent reforms, including stronger use of body cameras and better oversight during police operations.
The growing number of fatalities has stirred mixed reactions across communities, with some residents accusing the police of excessive force and labelling some of the killings as unjust. However, others believe the police are doing what’s necessary to fight crime. Supporters of the police argue that firm action is needed to remove dangerous individuals from the streets.
