An elderly woman has died after being run over by a doctor in India. The shocking incident in the Palghar district of Maharashtra has left the community in grief. Her death was captured on surveillance footage and is making the rounds on the internet after being shared on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
The victim, identified as 70-year-old Chayalata Vishwanath Arekar, was killed on April 9 on a hospital compound just as she exited the building. According to USA Crime, Arekar visited the BARC Colony in Boisar on Wednesday with her husband. She was left alone after accompanying him to a medical examination.
In the video, Arekar can be seen slowly walking across the compound when a red car suddenly appears and rounds a corner. The vehicle is reportedly driven by a doctor, and it fails to slow down as it heads directly towards her. Areka is seemingly unaware of the fast-approaching vehicle, and it strikes her.
The impact is evidently severe based on the footage. The car collides with the woman, knocking her to the ground. It continues forward, dragging her body along the hospital tarmac under the car.
Shortly after hitting the woman, the car stops, and someone rushes out from the hospital entrance. The individual is clearly alarmed by the incident, as well as several others who rush to the vehicle. Some appear to be medical officials.
A few steps away from where the vehicle stops, the victim’s slippers can be seen close to the point of impact. The hospital staff immediately rushed Arekar to the emergency department, but despite efforts to save her, she was declared dead, per the report.
USA Crime reported that police were called to the scene shortly after the incident. The doctor, whose name has not yet been officially released, was reportedly taken into custody.
There is currently no information on whether the hospital has officially addressed the tragedy. The report indicates that authorities are currently probing the incident.
