Jamaican dancehall icon Shaggy has reached another major milestone with his hit song It Wasn’t Me. The 2000 hit surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify, further cementing its global success. The song, which was featured on Shaggy’s 2000 album Hot Shot, has earned several musical accolades over the past decades.
Shaggy celebrated the milestone with a video shared on social media, showing off a plaque he received from Spotify. He expressed his gratitude to his supporters and Spotify. He acknowledged that the song sold millions in hard copy and added that it is “phenomenal” that it has generated billions in streams decades after its release.
In the caption of the post, he wrote, “1 BILLION streams on @spotify!!! BIG UP ALL THE FANS and everyone involved. Numbers don’t lie!!! THANK YOU!! #itwasntme #hotshot.”
It Wasn’t Me is Shaggy’s highest-charting single. The song has topped several charts in over 10 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Australia, Scotland, and Belgium.
In 2024, the song sold more than 600,000 units in Germany, earning a platinum certification. In the United Kingdom, the song became the best-selling single of 2001 with more than 2.4 million units sold and was certified 4x platinum.
As of August 2014, It Wasn’t Me earned the title of the 49th best-selling single of the 21st century in France. It was also certified 3x platinum in Australia and earned a gold certification in Austria, Italy, and Switzerland.
