Queen of Dancehall Spice acknowledged the amazing talents of the female artists in Dancehall, making them possible successors. In a recent interview, she expressed that there was not anyone who she could pass the crown in the past. However, multiple female dancehall artists in modern times have shown potential to be the next queen.
Listing a few of her fellow colleagues whom she believed could take the throne after her, she highlights Jada Kingdom, Shenseea, Pamputta, and Shaniel Muir.
“Next in line after me? You have a whole heap of people,” she said while smiling. “That’s a great question because back in the day there wasn’t anyone that I could mention, but there are so many names that I could mention right now. We big up the women in the music because there are a lot of females that are doing extremely great. So if you want me to name names, you have to talk about Jada Kingdom, Shenseea, Pamputtae, and Shaniel Muir. Everybody is super talented and doing great.”
Spice was further asked about the global impact her selection is making in comparison to her impact and whether they could achieve what she did. In response, she explained that ladies in the genre were making great progress in the international scene.
Spice highlighted Shenseea and Jada Kingdom’s international brands, expressing that they are adored worldwide, hinting that they could become international stars.
“Internationally, there are a lot of females that are doing great. Shenseea and Jada Kingdom are doing great things internationally. When you go overseas, they are all over the world. The music space has a lot of potential when it comes to females right now,” she said.
Spice’s response garnered much praise from social media users online when she shared a clip of the local interview on Instagram. In the caption of the post, she urged all female entertainers to keep working hard, saying, “Big up to all the women in the dancehall fraternity, even the names I didn’t mention. My love for females in the business goes far beyond who I think is next. I’ve walked it; I’ve been through it since I was 14 or 15. I don’t remember, but I know it’s not easy. So just keep going; you got this.”
Spice, born Grace Hamilton, has been a dancehall artist for 25 years. Excelling in an industry that is male-dominated is an exciting feat for her. She expressed that she is focused on celebrating the milestone, as it is a “big thing.”
