Renowned Canadian singer/rapper Tory Lanez has been working on some music behind bars, but his new music may be delayed due to a prison riot that broke out during his recording session. A video is circulating the internet of the incarcerated artiste spitting lyrics in prison when a riot breaks out behind him.
A report from TMZ shared that Lanez was recording a verse for a song that will be featured in his new album. He was using his phone to record the lyrics when all hell broke loose, putting him in harm’s way.
In the video, Lanez can be seen with his phone rapping about his experience in prison with an associate on the phone. “$500 on the Zelle will make ’em do gymnastics / Seen that n***a run up to the yard and he got backflipped / Cried in the cell so many nights, I got trapped in,” he raps.
The prisoners in his background become rowdy, and he initially tries to continue rapping while glancing behind him. However, the situation becomes too chaotic, causing him to stop. The shouts get louder, and Lanez can be seen watching the incident.
He gets up and walks away and then returns to tell the associate that he has to leave and disappears from the camera. According to the news report, he fled the scene when the prison guards intervened with pepper spray to stop the riot. The California jail, where the singer is imprisoned, has not commented on the incident that has captured the attention of many online.
It might take a while for fans to receive new music from the incarcerated artiste because this is not the first time he has faced challenges with recording his songs.
In the previous event, Lanez’s recording equipment was seized by the prison guards when they raided his cell. The officers stated that inmates were not allowed to have recording devices.
According to Tribune, Lanez’s legal team told Ceasar McDowell, CEO of Unite the People, that guards said the specific equipment Lanez had was prohibited for several reasons. However, Lanez did not believe this to be true, which was indicated online.
In an Instagram post, he claimed that the issue was the impact of his “Prison Tapes” series and not his self-recording skills. He said the prison officials felt threatened by the recordings, which funded legal representation for other inmates.
