The reports that reggae artiste Koffee was dropped by RCA have been called out to be a lie by the former president of Columbia Records UK, Ferdy Unger-Hamilton. Unger-Hamilton, a renowned UK artiste, denied the claims in a recent interview.
The allegations that Koffee was dropped by the record label made headlines in the last few weeks. It was said that a source from the label confirmed that she was removed. The allegations also said that the label’s website did not have her listed in their roster of artistes, where Jamaican artiste Skillibeng, who signed with the label as well, was still visible.
However, Unger-Hamilton rubbished the claims, explaining that she was never signed with any other company aside from his label, Promise Land Records.
Unger-Hamilton told Jamaica Observer on Wednesday, “Koffee is, and has always been, signed with Promised Land Records. Promised Land’s deal with Sony ended over two years ago, and we [Promised Land] are now distributed through Virgin.”
According to the news outlet, Promised Land Records and Sony-affiliated RCA had a distribution deal. Promised Land Records also had a distribution deal with Columbia. At no point was Koffee directly signed to either label, per the report.
News circulated that the reggae artiste, who hails from Spanish Town, St Catherine, was signed to RCA after her thrilling Grammy win in the Best Reggae Album category in 2020, which marked her as the very first female to win in the category. Additionally, her 2019 EP Rapture and her 2022 album Gifted were released by Promise Land Records.
Koffee, legally named Mikayla Victoria Simpson, also reacted to the allegations that she was dropped by the label. After World Music Views broke the story and shared it on Instagram, she left a laughing emoji in the comments. The artiste has been absent from the media and music scene for years. However, fans might be treated to new music from the entertainer soon.
Unger-Hamilton told the outlet, “New music is coming very soon.”
