The murder of Sashana Williams in Cupits District in Clarendon has shocked residents, some of whom heard the violent altercation that resulted in her throat being slashed allegedly by her husband. Residents reported hearing the sounds of a struggle coming from the home of 33-year-old Shashane Williams and her husband, according to reports. The incident happened around 12:10 a.m. on Tuesday.
When residents spotted smoke rising from the house, that was when they became concerned and rushed to the scene. A relative said that Shashane’s daughter, who was reportedly present at the home during the altercation, tried to intervene, but the suspect slapped her in the face. She subsequently fled from the house, and the mother tried to follow the child, but the suspect attacked her.
“Dem a fight and Shashane’s daughter try intervene and is like him box her, so she go through the door and Shashane a try go through the door too and him draw her back and kill har,” the relative said.
Residents found Williams’ body with an open neck wound and pulled her out of the burning house. Williams was reportedly killed during an altercation with her husband, who used a knife to cut her throat, according to Jamaica Star, citing reports from the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Communications Unit. The suspect then allegedly set the house on fire.
The relative said that the husband threw his two-year-old child through a window before setting the house on fire. “Before him, light the house; he threw dem babies that are about two years old through the window,” said the family member, per the report.
During the altercation, her husband reportedly sustained a slash on his neck. He was not at the scene when the police arrived, but he later turned himself in to the police without resistance. The husband was hospitalised under police guard following the incident.
What led to the brutal act remains unclear. The relative said the couple, who had been married for just a few years and shared a young child, never appeared to have serious issues. “Mi never hear dem argue before so mi don’t know what coulda happen,” the relative continued.
