A missing 13-year-old was found alive on Tuesday, sparking relief among Jamaicans. However, the circumstances surrounding her case have raised concern after authorities shared that her disappearance may have been tied to a religious cult.
The teen, Zaynah Shaw, had been reported missing by her family on April 7. She is a grade eight student at Glenmuir High School and a resident of Four Paths, Clarendon, according to local news outlets.
Her disappearance resulted in a full investigation by the National Strategic Anti-Gang Division (NSAD) of the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch (CTOC) of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
The breakthrough came when NSAD officers raided a property believed to be occupied by Zaynah’s aunt. During the search, officers found the teenager concealed beneath a bed.
“This property was occupied by her aunt, who is believed to be the mastermind, and another female, as well as two minor children,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Susan Bruce, head of NSAD, in a statement to the Jamaica Observer.
DSP Bruce said the aunt, the other woman, and an alleged pastor are suspected to be operating a religious cult at the location. “Both females and another male believed to be a pastor are now being questioned,” she continued.
In a separate twist, some individuals allegedly attempted to exploit the family’s desperation during the search for Zaynah by demanding ransom money, according to Bruce. “We are aware that some heartless individuals tried to take advantage of the child’s mother after this story became public. We are investigating these actions and are determined to bring those responsible to justice,” Bruce said.
The disturbing discovery has raised fresh concerns about the influence and operations of underground religious groups in Jamaica. Police have not yet disclosed the name of the group allegedly involved but confirmed that further investigations are underway.
