A Kingston man is facing multiple serious criminal charges after a woman accused him of raping her. The Jamaican woman claims that she was sexually assaulted by the phone technician when she attempted to pay him for repairing her phone.
The accused, who was identified as 27-year-old Tevin Myrie, was arrested and charged on Monday by the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA). He faces charges of rape and forcible abduction. According to a local news outlet, the charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on April 19.
According to police reports, the victim had visited Myrie to retrieve a phone she had given him to repair. Upon collecting the device, she would reportedly pay the fee for the repair service. However, when she tried to pay him, he allegedly refused the payment.
Myrie allegedly forced the victim inside his house, and he raped her, according to the Jamaica Star. When the woman was free to leave, she promptly reported the alleged assault to the police. Myrie, a resident of Maiden Lane, was later apprehended during a subsequent operation.
He was interviewed by the police and formally charged with the offence on April 28. Myrie has his first court date set for May 9. The victim’s identity has not been disclosed to the public.
The case has triggered intense discussion online, with many expressing disgust, while other comments displayed the disturbing and insensitive reactions from some social media users. Some responders have voiced concern over the alarming normalisation of coercive behaviour, which highlights a growing global issue.
They also condemned the alleged actions of the accused. Other social media users questioned the victim’s account, indicating that the allegations may not be the entire story. However, many firmly emphasised that consent is always required and it can be revoked at any time. The investigation remains ongoing as the court date approaches.
