A drunk driving arrest in Nevada ended in tragedy after a deputy fatally stabbed the suspect during an altercation. The deadly confrontation, captured on police body camera, ensued shortly after the suspect was taken into custody last Thursday.
The unidentified drunk driving suspect is accused of crashing his vehicle into two parked cars in Clark County. Following the collision, he was detained around 11 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s office. The suspect was brought to the Washington State Patrol weigh station in Ridgefield, where deputies intended to administer a breath-alcohol test.
Once inside the breath test room at the weigh station building, things took a violent turn. Just before midnight, the deputy radioed for help, reporting that he was involved in a physical altercation with the suspect, per the report. According to the sheriff’s office, the man tried to grab the deputy’s firearm during the struggle.
In response, the deputy reportedly used a knife to stab the suspect multiple times. Emergency crews arrived and began lifesaving efforts, but the suspect was pronounced dead at 12:39 a.m.
The released footage shows the pair tussling while the deputy shouts at the suspect, repeatedly warning him to release his weapon. The deputy addressed the suspect as ‘Mark’ while he warned him that he would get shot if he did not stop. The body camera deactivates during the struggle and reactivates to show the suspect on the ground. The deputy, with bloody hands, cuts the suspect’s clothing open to reveal several stab wounds inflicted on his back.
The deputy involved, whose identity has also not been released, was not injured. As part of standard procedure, he has been placed on leave while the incident is under investigation. Oversight of the investigation has been handed over to the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations.
