Chris Brown found himself back behind bars in the UK after a Manchester court refused his bid for bail. The R&B star was arrested early Thursday at a five-star hotel, the Lowry Hotel, for allegedly attacking a music producer with a bottle at London’s Tape nightclub on February 19, 2023.
On Friday, 36-year-old Brown stood before District Judge Joanne Hirst at Manchester Magistrates’ Court. Hirst ruled he must remain in custody until June 13, when he is due to enter a plea and prepare for trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.
That June date coincides with a sold-out concert in Germany, which now looks unlikely to proceed as planned. Brown, who has an upcoming tour, has a European itinerary that includes shows in the Netherlands on June 8 and Germany on June 11, followed by performances across the UK and Europe in June and July.
He was booked on charges of “grievous bodily harm with intent” stemming from the Mayfair nightclub incident. According to reports, music producer Abe Diaw was reportedly struck over the head with a bottle of Don Julio 1942 tequila before being kicked. He was allegedly unconscious for a while and required emergency hospital care.
Brown was arrested just hours after arriving in Manchester by private jet. News of his arrest left many fans concerned about the tour and garnered mocking remarks as well as criticism.
Brown’s career has often been overshadowed by legal battles. The controversial singer has been accused of assault and abuse on multiple occasions throughout his career. His 2009 felony conviction for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna has trailed him for over a decade.
Chris Brown’s run-ins with the law extend beyond his 2009 conviction. In 2012, a clash at a Manhattan club between his crew and associates of Drake left NBA veteran Tony Parker with a glass bottle–inflicted eye wound. Another assault case unfolded in Washington, D.C., 2 years later, during which he pleaded guilty to attacking a fan. Then, in 2016, authorities took him into custody after a woman claimed he brandished a handgun during a dispute.
