A woman recently lost her life after participating in a dangerous TikTok challenge that involved setting her clothes on fire. The woman ignited her attire during a live stream after she lost a bet to a fellow TikToker. The alarming incident happened when the woman was home with her family in Jászság, Hungary.
She was identified as a mother of two children, whom she shares with her husband, who commutes to Germany for work. On the day of the incident, she was streaming from the hallway of their apartment while her husband, their children, and the kids’ grandmother were in a different section of the house. When the challenge went horribly wrong, the woman’s husband heard her screaming as she ran around in the hallway.
A recording of the livestream shows the woman in a TikTok live stream match with an unidentified man. In the video, the man is amused when she sets her shirt on fire, but his laughter fades when the woman visibly becomes distressed and begins screaming.
She eventually runs into another section of the apartment, and more screams erupt. The screams came from her presumably terrified children and continued throughout the video.
According to a report, her husband ran to extinguish the flames. He told a Hungarian news outlet that he used water from a pot in the sink to douse the fire, while his mother-in-law helped tear the shirt from her body. After putting out the fire, they brought her to the bathroom and gave her a cold shower before calling emergency services. She was taken to the hospital for treatment, but her condition worsened when she developed pneumonia.
Despite undergoing surgery, the Hungarian woman died from the infection. Authorities are now investigating the case under suspicion of aiding suicide and have already questioned the TikToker with whom she made the dangerous bet. According to reports, the challenge required the loser to ignite their clothing and keep it on for 20 seconds before removing it. However, the flames quickly engulfed her clothes, making it impossible for her to remove them.
Her husband described her as an active TikToker who socialised with other users and partook in many challenges. The children and I were in the room when I noticed my wife screaming from the hallway while ‘going live.’ I ran out and saw her shirt was on fire,” he told a Hungarian newspaper.
According to his accounts, his wife lit a cigarette after an alarming incident, and then she was later carried away by paramedics, which was the last time he saw her. The TikTok user she had made the bet with later responded to public backlash, denying that he was responsible for the incident.
He defended himself by arguing that the woman accepted the challenge knowing it was risky. “I ask the negative commenters to stop calling me a murderer because I am not to blame and never will be,” he said. He reiterated that it was not his fault and they were only playing a game. The TikToker also expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased.
