Dancehall veteran Beenie Man is once again in the spotlight due to controversy surrounding the role he plays in his children’s lives. This comes after the release of a new song by his ex-wife D’Angel that highlights the challenges of single parenthood, focusing particularly on mothers. The song raised questions about whether she had shouldered the responsibility of raising her son, Marco-Dean, on her own, without support from his father, Beenie Man.
D’Angel has been known to sing songs of a similar nature in the past, and her latest track, Single Mothers, left media personality Jenny Jenny eager to address the lingering speculation: was D’Angel singing from personal experience? Jenny Jenny raised the question during a recent interview that featured dancehall deejay Khago, the songwriter behind the track.
Jenny Jenny highlights several lines in the track, emphasising that the struggling mother is all alone, as the father is unreliable. “Are you throwing shade at Beenie Man?” Jenny asked, to which D’Angel denied.
The singer expressed that the song serves as a voice for all single mothers globally, and not a jab at her ex-husband. When asked if he assisted with raising her son, she initially refrained from commenting on that matter. However, she later explained that she not only raised her son but also stepped in as a father figure when needed. She indicated that Beenie Man assisted in some instances.
Khago also denied that the song was a subliminal shot at Beenie Man, indicating that he wrote it for mothers, including D’Angel.
Following the interview, Jenny placed Beenie Man in the hot seat during an on-air conversation with him about the song. When she questioned him about being an absentee father, as the song suggests, he denied the allegation.
He also denied having any knowledge of the track and stressed that the song is not about him or her son. “I am always in my kids’ lives…anybody weh sing dat a lie dem a tell…” A lie she tell…Dat a lie,” he said.
