A businessman from Westmoreland, who was kidnapped on Tuesday, was allegedly freed after a ransom of $5 million was paid to his captors. The victim, Gavin Myers from Darliston, was returned to his family on Wednesday, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Glenford Miller.
Miller, who leads the Area One Police Division, which includes Westmoreland, confirmed that Myers has been safely returned. He also stated that the police are still investigating the incident, including the ransom that was paid for his release.
Myers, who owns a car mart in Darliston and aspires to be a recording artist, received a call from someone claiming to be interested in purchasing a vehicle on Monday. The two arranged to meet at 7 a.m. the following morning at Myers’ business location. But instead of a buyer, a car reportedly pulled up with three armed men. The vehicle, a Toyota Crown, was occupied by men with rifles who forced him into their vehicle at gunpoint.
The brazen daylight abduction sparked alarm among residents who witnessed the incident and quickly called the police. However, with little to go on and no immediate demands made, investigators found themselves with more questions than answers.
Behind the scenes, sources report that individuals close to Myers took action, reportedly engaging in direct negotiations with the captors. These efforts, without police involvement, are believed to have led to Myers’ release between late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
While ACP Miller confirmed Myers’ safe return, he noted that the payment of a ransom is still under investigation. The police have made it clear that, despite the outcome, the case remains open. The fact that high-powered firearms were used has added to their concern. Myers now joins a growing list of businessmen in western Jamaica who have fallen victim to similar crimes.
As the investigation continues, authorities are hoping to uncover more about those responsible and the motive behind the abduction, with ACP Miller affirming that the police are taking this matter seriously.
