President Donald Trump underwent a thorough medical check-up after noticing mild swelling in his lower legs. The checkup led to a diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency. The announcement was made Thursday by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who shared the details from a medical report issued by Trump’s physician, Capt. Sean Barbabella.
The 79-year-old’s examination included vascular studies and ultrasounds that confirmed the condition. Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when the veins in the legs are unable to efficiently return blood to the heart. Reports confirmed that though it may sound serious, it’s a relatively common issue for people in Trump’s age group and does not indicate a deeper health crisis.
“Bilateral lower extremity venous doppler ultrasounds were performed and revealed chronic venous insufficiency,” Barbabella noted, describing it as a common diagnosis among individuals over 70. Additionally, the scans showed no signs of deep vein thrombosis or arterial complications.
According to Leavitt, additional testing, including an echocardiogram, also came back clear, ruling out heart failure, kidney issues, or systemic illness. Routine lab work was similarly reported as normal.
Importantly, the president has not been experiencing pain or discomfort due to the condition, Leavitt confirmed. While no specific treatment was disclosed during the briefing, a more detailed follow-up from Barbabella is expected.
The press secretary also addressed the appearance of bruises on the back of Trump’s hand, which have drawn attention in recent public appearances. She attributed the marks to minor irritation from frequent handshakes, compounded by his regular use of aspirin, a medication often prescribed for cardiovascular protection.
“This is consistent with minor soft tissue irritation,” Leavitt explained, citing Barbabella’s observation. Trump’s overall medical assessment showed no red flags. Medical experts note that chronic venous insufficiency is a manageable condition, especially when monitored closely. Trump is on track to become the oldest president in the U.S.
