Over the weekend, Reggae Sumfest recorded its largest crowd in history due to Vybz Kartel’s monumental performance and coronation ceremony. However, Vybz Kartel has found himself in the middle of a controversy involving Jahshii and Masicka, and while he has not responded to it, his world-touring emcee had a mouthful to say. Popular entertainer MC Nuffy lashed out at the two deejays in a circulating video over statements made during their set at Reggae Sumfest.
When Masicka took the stage, he expressed that this year’s staging may be his last appearance. While he indicated that this was due to disrespect, he did not elaborate on the matter. He also reminded fans that he is the “baddest artiste,” a statement that Jahshii also supported when he shared the stage with Masicka.
Jahshii also evidently threw shade at Vybz Kartel, hinting that no one is as talented as Masicka despite the crowning ceremony that officially made Kartel the ‘King of Dancehall.’ In response, MC Nuffy hurled expletives at the pair and described them as “badmind.” He also said that Jahshii had a good opportunity in his career, but he chose to follow behind other artistes.
“All who deh deh a chat up dem mouth, unuh cyah pass Beenie Man…A who tell unuh seh unuh a king?” he asked, indicating that they are yet to leave their mark, but they wanted to claim the title.
“After dah king yah, there will be no more king in blood***t dancehall,” he continued, explaining that the deejays were not putting in the work to earn the title, so it would end with Vybz Kartel. Nuffy, who dubbed himself the King emcee in dancehall, stated that the issue in dancehall when it came to the King title was the other entertainers who are “badmind.”
While MC Nuffy believes that Masicka’s words were subliminals at Vybz Kartel, social media users believe otherwise. Several users have said that Masicka was upset due to changes in his performance time. Instagram user @Sipsofsue said that it seemed that Masicka was pushed into an earlier slot because dancehall artiste Skeng was running late.
When the curtains fell on the highly anticipated event over the weekend, it left a lasting impression, from its top performances to its controversies. Among the less favourable moments was a stampede that left several injured and many valuables missing, prompting police to take action to restore order and the event organisers to implement stronger crowd control and safety measures.
