A Nigerian policeman’s two sons were killed after one decapitated the other, and a mob of angry residents retaliated by killing him. The disturbing incident occurred in Odigbo, the Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, and extremely graphic and gruesome footage has emerged. Reports say the officer’s older son, a 26-year-old only identified as Daniel, murdered his 15-year-old brother, Emmanuel, as part of a ritual.
The beheading took place at a secluded area of the community at the banks of the Origbara River, where Daniel lured his younger brother, according to reports citing a resident. It was another resident who first saw Daniel at the riverbank, allegedly trying to conceal something in a black bag. The individual was initially there to cross the river, but upon approaching and realising Daniel had a human head, the resident began yelling.
One local, identified as Roland Akinkunmi, said he heard the shouting; when he went to check, he was stunned. “At first, I didn’t realise it was his brother’s. I was in shock,” he shared. News of the killing spread quickly through the community, and an outraged group of local youths reportedly caught up with Daniel and retaliated by lynching him. He was beaten to death before authorities arrived.
According to reports, a spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, said Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal has ordered an immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough probe.
The tragedy has left the community in deep shock, with one resident saying they never anticipated something so gruesome. According to Akinkunmi, the two brothers had an argument earlier that day, but no one imagined that the older brother would sever his sibling’s head. However, they suspect that the beheading went beyond a verbal altercation.
Reports identify the father as a respected senior community police officer known as “Awilo.” Residents say the family had moved to the community a while back, and everything was fine until recently.
