Cardi B walked out of court on Tuesday with a weight lifted off her shoulders after a Los Angeles jury unanimously found her not liable in a civil assault and battery case that sought $24 million in damages. The verdict closed a chapter that had been looming over the rapper since 2020.
The case was brought by Emani Ellis, a former security guard who claimed that in 2018, Cardi attacked her during an encounter at her obstetrician’s office. Ellis alleged that the rapper cut her face with a fingernail, spat on her, and hurled racial slurs during the confrontation. However, after hearing testimony from both sides, the jury sided with Cardi, concluding that there was no evidence to support Ellis’ accusations.
During her testimony, Cardi admitted to having words with Ellis but firmly denied ever getting physical. Cardi accused Ellis of recording her visit without permission. Cardi told the court that Ellis was “much bigger”, and since she was pregnant with her first child at the time, the allegations did not make sense.
Her defence was bolstered by testimony from her doctor and his receptionist, who both said they never witnessed any assault. That contrast between Ellis’ account and the supporting statements from medical staff appeared to weigh heavily in Cardi’s favour.
Despite losing the case, Ellis struck a calm tone afterwards, telling reporters she wasn’t disappointed by the outcome and was simply grateful to have her day in court. Her attorney announced plans to appeal, indicating that the legal battle may not be entirely over.
For Cardi, however, the verdict was a decisive win and a moment to make her position clear. Speaking outside the courthouse, she warned that she would not hesitate to countersue in the future if anyone attempts to drag her into another baseless case.
Throughout the trial, Cardi made her presence known both in testimony and in her fashion statements, arriving in court in polished looks and bold hairstyles.
