Dancehall performer Andrae Maurice Whittaker, better known as Squash, has taken a pivotal step in addressing his legal troubles in the United States by entering a plea agreement in a federal firearms case. The move resolves one of the two charges he faced while allowing prosecutors to drop the second count.
Under the terms of the agreement, Squash has pleaded guilty to being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm or ammunition. The charge concerning possession of an automatic weapon has been dismissed. Squash is also required to pay a $100 special assessment fee at the time of sentencing.
Prosecutors are recommending a reduced sentence, citing the efficiency of resolving the matter through the plea, though the judge retains full discretion. Squash faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and fines that could reach $250,000.
Beyond the criminal case, the plea carries serious immigration implications. By admitting to the charge, Squash acknowledges committing a deportable offence, which could trigger removal proceedings. However, immigration consequences will be determined separately.
The incident at the heart of the case took place on February 24 in Miami Beach, Florida. Law enforcement observed Squash receiving what appeared to be a firearm before entering a vehicle that violated multiple traffic rules. As officers approached, he reached toward the glove compartment, where a loaded Glock 19 pistol was later discovered with the driver’s consent.
Court documents also note that Squash entered the United States without authorisation in January 2021, making his possession of a firearm particularly significant under the law.
The plea agreement outlines strict conditions, including surrendering any additional firearms or ammunition. It also prevents Squash from withdrawing the plea if the court does not follow sentencing recommendations. Any false statements, additional criminal activity, or attempts to mislead authorities would nullify the deal. Squash’s sentencing date has not yet been set.
