A 31-year-old woman was shot and killed just outside her son’s school in South Loop, Chicago, during an altercation with the child’s father and his current girlfriend. The deceased, identified by social media as Romeca Meeks, was involved in what police describe as a domestic-related incident shortly after 9 a.m. in the 2200 block of South State Street.
Moments earlier, Meeks had dropped off her young son. When Meeks encountered her father, Carlos “Losos” Way, and his current partner outside the school, tensions flared. Witnesses reported a heated exchange that quickly turned physical before one of the women produced a gun. According to a report, a witness said Way had Meeks in a headlock, which was when his girlfriend shot her.
Four shots were fired, striking Meeks multiple times, including a gunshot to the face. She was transported to Stroger Hospital but did not survive her injuries. Police confirmed the shooter was taken into custody at the scene, though no charges have been announced. The suspect, who also shares a child with Way, has claimed she acted in self-defence and pointed to a restraining order she allegedly had against Meeks. Way also said he acted in self-defence.

Shocking video from the aftermath shows bystanders confronting the suspect, who remained on her phone near a white sedan while Meeks lay on the ground. Witnesses can be heard accusing her of pulling the trigger, while she responded that she was licensed to carry a firearm.

The tragic incident unfolded just hours after Meeks posted a message to her son on social media, encouraging him to start his day strong and expressing her love for him.
“Happy Monday, son. This is a fresh start to this day, and you can start off strong. Always remain yourself; you’re the coolest, smartest and funniest kid I know. I love you so much. –Love Mommy,” she said.
