Police shot and killed four gunmen in an alleged confrontation that ensued when the armed men attempted to escape a murder scene in St Catherine. The first crime scene was in Guy’s Hill, where a group of five gunmen shot two men on Wednesday evening.
One of the men died from his injuries, while the other survived and has since been hospitalised. The criminal group fled the area in a vehicle after the incident, but did not make it far before police intercepted them.
According to reports, the men were travelling in a KIA motorcar that was later spotted heading toward Linstead, prompting the police to intercept it along the bypass. Police sources say that as the vehicle approached the Rosemount district, it crashed, forcing the men to abandon it. It was at this point, officers allege, that the occupants opened fire on them. The police reportedly took cover and returned the gunfire.
When the shooting ended, four of the men were found suffering from gunshot wounds. They were taken to the Linstead Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. A fifth suspect is believed to have escaped the scene during the chaos.
It is currently unknown if the fifth suspect was injured during the intense standoff. Two illegal firearms were reportedly recovered from the site of the confrontation. Journalist Andre Williams also shared that one policeman was allegedly shot and injured during the confrontation. Police have not yet identified the victims who were shot in the Guy’s Hill area.
It is unclear if the illegal firearms were used in both the Guy’s Hill murder. The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has since launched an official probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Based on a report citing INDECOM, the number of people killed by police during alleged confrontations this year has risen to 260 as of November 12.
