A 14-year-old girl in St Catherine was repeatedly sexually molested, and her mother has now been charged. The situation, already troubling because of the nature of the allegations, has drawn even more attention due to claims that the mother played an active role in what took place.
Investigators say the accusations came to light after a report was filed with the Spanish Town Police. That report set off a chain of enquiries that eventually pointed officers toward a pattern of behaviour stretching from June 1 to November 22. During that period, police allege that the mother repeatedly took her daughter to the home of a man who is also now facing charges.
It is during those visits, according to the investigation, that the sexual molestation occurred. The man allegedly sexually assaulted the teen on several occasions. The findings also suggest that the adult accused was not acting alone. Officers believe the mother knowingly cooperated with him, leading to charges that reflect both her alleged involvement.
The list of charges for both accused is extensive. They include three counts of sexual touching, three counts of grooming a child, trafficking, conspiracy, aiding and abetting, and misprision of felony.
Police say the situation also involved an exchange of money. The man reportedly gave the teenager $34,000, and investigators were told that the girl handed that money over to her mother. While the purpose of the payment has not been outlined publicly, it now forms part of the evidence being reviewed.
With both individuals taken into custody and charged, authorities are now preparing for the next stage of the legal process. A court date is currently being finalised, and once confirmed, the pair will appear to answer to the allegations made against them.
The case has left many reacting with concern, especially because the victim is a minor and one of the accused is her parent. Police have not released additional details about the child’s current situation.
