A woman was shot dead in a car she was travelling in with a man and a toddler when armed men ambushed it in Chicago. The daytime shooting occurred in Auburn Gresham when several gunmen swarmed the vehicle sometime after 1:20 p.m.
Reports say that the woman, identified as 26-year-old Gabryel Gnia Ayres, a 27-year-old man, and a toddler were in a white car along South May Street. Ayres was killed, the man was injured and the child was spared. The toddler was seated in the back of the vehicle. It is unclear who was driving at the time of the incident.
During the ambush, the gunmen sprinted toward the vehicle and began shooting at close range. The shooting was captured on camera, and the footage has been circulating online. In the video, the gunmen are seen shooting at the vehicle before running in the opposite direction. They fled the scene in an awaiting red Alfa Romeo. While inside, they fired more shots in the direction of the victim’s car and then sped off.
According to the report, Ayres and the other adult were shot, but the child was unharmed. Ayres suffered several gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries. The man was transported to another hospital with gunshot wounds to the arm and lower body. Officials believe he will make a full recovery.
A witness shared with the media that the toddler was crying after the incident. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, the child was seen holding a lollipop. After the gunfire ceased, the victims’ vehicle rolled forward and struck a parked vehicle.
The driver of the parked vehicle declined medical treatment when first responders arrived. While the motive behind the shooting is unclear, authorities say it was a targeted attack. The incident is still being investigated by police.
