A 40-year prison sentence was imposed in the Supreme Court on former West St. Mary Member of Parliament Jolyan Silvera after he admitted responsibility for the killing of his wife, Melissa Silvera. The penalties were handed down by Chief Justice Bryan Sykes, who sentenced the embattled politician for two separate offences related to the fatal shooting.
Despite the combined sentence totalling four decades, Silvera will effectively spend 20 years and 10 months behind bars because the court ordered that the terms run concurrently, meaning they will be served at the same time. The former lawmaker received 20 years for manslaughter in connection with his wife’s death. He was also handed 20 years and 10 months for using a firearm to commit a felony.

Silvera had initially faced a murder charge, but earlier this year, he changed his plea in court, admitting guilt to manslaughter instead. His guilty plea brought the lengthy criminal matter closer to resolution, avoiding a full trial on the murder charge.
During his sentencing on March 6, a statement from Silvera describing the events of November 10, 2023, was read aloud. In it, he told the court that the fatal shooting happened during a heated argument between him and his wife inside their home.

Silvera said the relationship had been under strain after their son drowned in their pool. He explained that disagreements between them had become frequent, with his wife blaming him for the infant’s death. According to his account, the situation escalated on the night in question when an argument intensified, and emotions ran high.
He told the court that he attempted to leave the home to prevent the dispute from worsening. He said that during the tense exchange, he reached for his firearm to holster it and leave. Silvera claimed the situation spiralled out of control when his wife allegedly tried to grab the weapon while continuing the argument. He said she blamed him for the death of their son, accused him of having a sexual relationship with his sister, and told him to have sex with his mother and that he should drown their other children in the pool.

He said her harsh and derogatory words made him react impulsively. He said in the heat of the moment, he lost control and discharged the firearm, resulting in her death. In the statement presented in court, he maintained that the shooting was not premeditated and said he had never intended to harm or kill his wife.
Following the incident, Silvera left the location, and he said he did so out of panic. Authorities later arrested him, and he has been in custody since January 2024 while the case progressed through the justice system.
