Two men were arrested for allegedly stabbing a man to death at a party in St Thomas. Police say the detainees, 45-year-old Dwayne Capleton, who also goes by the alias ‘Tall Man’, and 41-year-old Oneil Stewart, are responsible for the stab wounds that were inflicted on victim Eaton Whittle’s chest and back in the Fort District.
After investigators identified the men as suspects during an identification parade held last week, Capleton and Stewart were charged with murder.
Police reported that Capleton is from Lyssons, while Stewart is an entertainer of the Fort district. They were at a late-night public gathering on February 18 as patrons when they got into an altercation with Whittle, who was also a patron. There were a number of people in attendance at the event when the incident unfolded.
Reports say it began as an argument around 1:30 p.m. that spiralled out of control. During the confrontation, Whittle was attacked and stabbed multiple times, sustaining serious injuries to his chest and back.
The police say he was stabbed with a knife and reported that their investigation suggests both accused men may have handled the weapon during the incident. The report says the knife was passed between the two suspects.
In the aftermath of the stabbing, the suspects reportedly fled the scene on foot, leaving Whittle critically injured. A motorist driving by saw the injured man and offered assistance, taking him to the Princess Margaret Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
After charging the suspects, a court date was finalised on March 24 for their first court appearance.
Authorities further indicated that the parish has now recorded three homicides since the beginning of the year. Investigators confirmed that individuals have been taken into custody in each case as law enforcement continues its push to address ongoing violence in St Thomas.
