A man in Linstead, St Catherine, was arrested after he allegedly sexually assaulted a student who was heading to school. Reports say that the man, identified as Daleton Brown, has two professions; he is employed at the Linstead Police Station as a janitor, and he works as a taxi operator.
He is accused of raping the teen when he was transporting her to school late last month. Police say the victim, whose identity was not released due to the nature of the case, was in Linstead waiting for a taxi to go to school on March 23 when the disturbing ordeal began.
According to the allegations, the accused drove up and picked up the victim in his vehicle. During the journey to the institution, the driver’s actions became indecent. He was allegedly touching her inappropriately, and then he took her elsewhere. The report says he diverted his vehicle and parked at an unidentified location.
Once there began the sexual assault. After being raped, the teen was later released, which was when she rushed home. She alerted her family to the ordeal she suffered while heading to school, and the police were contacted.
A formal report was made, prompting an investigation which was overseen by the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse. Following the probe, officers took Brown into custody. An identification process was conducted, and when the victim positively pointed him out, charges were laid against him in connection with the incident.
Brown was slapped with three criminal charges, including rape, indecent assault, and grievous sexual assault.
The 44-year-old appeared in court earlier this week when he was remanded. His case was mentioned before Acting Senior Parish Court Judge Janelle Nelson-Gaye. The court scheduled the next hearing on May 19, and Brown will remain in custody until then.
