In Maverick County, Texas, a 2-year-old girl was discovered travelling alone by authorities. The little girl was among 200 migrants, which included 60 minors who were travelling alone. The group was taken into custody after she crossed the border on Sunday, and the little girl was questioned by the authorities.
Investigation has revealed that the little girl is from El Salvador, and she was heading to the United States to find her parents. A video surfaced online showing the toddler dressed in a bright pink jacket speaking to the authorities as they questioned her. She was also seen with a small yellow piece of paper, which had a name and number scribbled on it.
The video, which was released by The Texas Department of Public Safety, has since been circulating the internet. Lt. Chris Olivarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety spoke on how concerning the situation is. He expressed that it was a prime example of how criminal organisations exploit vulnerable children by trafficking them across the border. “Regardless of political views, it is unacceptable for any child to be exposed to dangerous criminal trafficking networks,” Olivarez said.
In recent years, the number of unaccompanied minors crossing the U.S. border has increased. According to the report, over 529,000 migrant children have crossed the border during Biden’s administration. While trying to escape poverty, violence, and other situations, most of them travelled alone.
