Jamaican citizens are becoming concerned about the meat they eat at Asian restaurants after a video surfaced showing a man of Asian descent skinning a dog in preparation for what seems to be human consumption.
The disturbing video was secretly recorded to catch the man in the act. TVJ News exposed the video to the public, reporting that an investigation has been launched into the matter as dog consumption is illegal in Jamaica.
Asia is renowned for its diverse cuisine, and dog meat is considered normal in particular countries like China.
According to the report, the video was taken this week in Jamaica. Sources told the news outlet that Asians who are in Jamaica to work have been capturing and consuming dogs.
Head of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Pamela Lawson expressed she was disgusted when she saw the video. Chief Veterinary Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture Dr. Osbil Watson described the incident as frightening and stated that they received multiple complaints about similar situations, but never obtained evidence of it.
He stated that this video reveals several issues, such as animal welfare, public health, and the breach of the Butcher’s Regulations, which lists the acceptable meat that can be consumed in the country.
In the video, a man is holding a knife while cutting the carcass of the dog. The body is skinned while the head remains untouched.
