Jamaica is now facing a leptospirosis outbreak following the passage of Hurricane Melissa. Officials have already positively identified nine cases, and there are 6 deaths linked to suspected cases that have yet to be confirmed. A 10-year-old boy was killed in a motor vehicle incident involving a Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC). The incident happened in the Vineyard Town community in St Andrew on Thursday morning. The child, identified as Shamarie Sharp of Central Avenue, was struck along 4th Avenue at about 7:20 a.m.  After being hit, Sharp was rushed to the hospital with multiple injuries, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead. Police have confirmed that one of the men in Wednesday’s alleged police confrontation was Salime Fitzgerald, who allegedly killed a police officer in December 2024. Fitzgerald goes by the alias “Smeagle” and resides on New Lincoln Road, Kingston 5.
