More and more workers from different hotels in Jamaica have been protesting recently for low wages. On Friday, the Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts workers flooded the street with massive strikes. The strike, which started sometime early in the day, continued into the night with the workers shouting “No money, no work.” Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts is located in Runaway Bay in St. Ann.

Despite the darkness, the protesters stood their ground and demanded the dismissal of the current hotel manager. The people from the protest streamed the events live on TikTok, showing how they stood in solidarity for an increase in pay.

One person streaming live stated that all the guests inside the hotel were not getting served because everyone was outside. During the strike, someone apparently tried to negotiate with the strikers, but the terms appeared not to be favourable because the protestors started objecting and shouting “no.”

According to one female, the base pay that they were getting was $30,000 fortnightly. This figure shocked the viewers in the comments section, who also objected to the pay. The female also shared that lots of tax was being taken from their pay as well.

According to the female, they were overworked from juggling their duties and the work of others. The job also offered them no benefits unless they had been employed for over 10 years.

“The hotel manager needs to go,” one female stated.

Police officers were also at the location, observing the protest to ensure it was done peacefully.
