A yellow Hiace bus overturned while carrying passengers, most of whom were students, in downtown Kingston. The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday morning inside the Pechon Street Transport Centre, and the aftermath was captured on video.
Footage circulating online shows the bus lying on its side as a large crowd rushes toward it to help those trapped inside. Some of the occupants were seen climbing out through one of the bus windows as people shouted instructions and worked together to assist.
At one point, a schoolboy who was halfway out of the vehicle was forced to retreat back inside when members of the crowd began pushing the bus in an attempt to turn it back onto its wheels.
Moments later, the bus was successfully flipped upright. However, it was revealed that the bus had fallen on a man who was immediately seen lying on the ground. The visibly injured man could barely move. Social media users identified the injured man as the conductor, but this has not been confirmed by official reports.
After the remaining passengers exited the vehicle, the man was lifted from the ground and placed inside the bus to be transported to the hospital. Another man was also injured in the crash, according to the Jamaica Star.
The bus driver was later accused of reckless driving after another video was shared online, allegedly showing moments before the incident. The clip shows a yellow bus speeding and engaging in risky manoeuvres inside the same bus park.
Online users have alleged that the bus seen in that video is the same one that was later overturned. In the clip, several people are seen standing near the door as the bus moves aggressively. Many social media users pointed out that these small yellow buses, which mainly transport young people and students, are often associated with reckless behaviour and loud music and expressed hope that the police would intervene in this case.
