Three people were killed after a city bus ran over a group of moped riders in India on Wednesday evening. The tragic accident, caught by surveillance footage, occurred in Rajkot, Gujarat, when the street was busy with motorists and pedestrians were bustling along the sidewalk.
Approximately seven people were stuck by the bus near KKV Chowk, two of whom sustained injuries. According to reports, the circulating footage shows everyone going about their day before the bus appears in the frame and strikes multiple riders on mopeds. The bus stops seconds later, and some of the individuals can be seen getting to their feet. One man was notably limping as he moved away from the scene.
DCP (Traffic) Pooja Yadav of Rajkot city police addressed the incident, stating that the deceased were sent for postmortem examinations while the injured were transported to the hospital.
“This appears to be a fatal accident involving a city bus, resulting in the death of three people,” he said. “As of now, we haven’t received full details about the deceased. All dead bodies and the injured have been sent to the hospital via ambulance. Our effort is to ensure that traffic in the area remains unhindered.”
According to USA Crime, eyewitnesses claim the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash. The tragedy has shaken the Rajkot community, igniting backlash from furious locals who took to the streets in protest. Some were seen vandalising property, while others blocked traffic in the vicinity of the crash site, per the report. The demonstration led to a brief period of unrest before police intervened to restore order.
Residents are reportedly calling for the arrest of the bus driver. Police officials are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the driver has been arrested.
