A California driver was killed after officers unleashed a volley of gunshots at him as he continued to ram into police vehicles. The man appeared to be an angry and impatient customer at a drive-thru when he was filmed on Wednesday. The footage, seemingly recorded by an onlooker, captured him in an In-N-Out parking lot in Manteca, ramming his vehicle into cars.
According to the Manteca Police Department, the incident began around 4 p.m. when the suspect started creating a chaotic scene in the drive-thru. Police said the suspect was in the drive-thru line when he began ramming into other cars that were also waiting in line.
Afterwards, he tried to place his order, but the restaurant rejected it. Afterwards, he was met by officers who responded to a report regarding the situation. Despite officers demanding that he exit the vehicle and cooperate, the driver charged his vehicle into a police cruiser, per the report.
At least two other police vehicles were struck when the suspect forcefully collided with the vehicle, causing it to ram into others. Police said that was when they discharged their weapons at him. Based on the number of gunshots heard in the video, police fired at least 15 rounds at the suspect. When the shots finally cease, the suspect appears to be motionless in the vehicle.
Officials reported that the suspect was wounded and transported to the hospital, and no officers sustained any wounds. On Thursday, the suspect succumbed to his injuries, and his death was confirmed by the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner.
Officials identified the deceased as 69-year-old Charles McGonegal II. He is also reported to be a resident of Manteca. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. It is currently unclear if any of the officers at the scene were suspended while the investigation is ongoing.
