Caroline Wozniacki, former world number 1 and Grand Slam winner, will resume the thread of her career in August in Montreal, more than three years after her retirement from sport, announced the 32-year-old Dane in the American magazine Vogue on Thursday.
Caroline Wozniacki will make her comeback on the courts. After ending her career in 2020, the tennis champion therefore returns to the circuit after giving birth to two children.
“I’m going to play the US Open. There’s an electric atmosphere in New York that I can’t get enough of, and I’ve played so well there for years. (…) I’ll start with Montreal (7-13 August) to get back into the rhythm, and then head to New York,” says Wozniacki. After that, I will have a few months to prepare for Australia. (…) The Paris Olympics are also a goal,” she continues.
The US Open in sight
Wozniacki, who became world number 1 in 2010 and won her only Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2018, ended her career after the 2020 Australian Open (beaten in the third round by Jabeur) , while suffering from a chronic inflammatory joint disease, rheumatoid arthritis.
“Am I nervous? Not really. I’m going back to something I love. (…) Can I win the US Open? I think so. Can I win the Australian Open. I think so, says the former world No.1. That’s why I’m doing this.”
I want to prove myself and prove to women that you can have both: to be happy with your family at home and to have a brilliant career.
Since then, the Danish player has given birth to two children, Olivia, in 2021, and James, last October. It was only after the birth of her son that she returned to tennis.
Over these past three years away from the game I got to make up for lost time with my family, I became a mother and now have two beautiful children I am so grateful for. But I still have goals I want to accomplish. I want to show my kids that you can pursue your dreams no matter… pic.twitter.com/OQatFWxQGK

Before her, Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters or Victoria Azarenka continued their sports careers after having a child.
“For female players, it’s often one or the other, and I’d like to help change that,” Wozniacki wrote. “I want to prove myself and women that you can have both: to be fulfilled with family at home and have a brilliant career.”
After her motherhood, Williams reached four Grand Slam finals, without succeeding in winning. Clijsters has won three Grand Slams after becoming a mother, twice at the US Open and once at the Australian Open.
