According to New York police, Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed Wednesday morning in Midtown Manhattan in a “brazen, targeted attack” when he was making his way to the company’s annual investor meeting. The shooter is still at large.
New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that just before 7 a.m., a masked shooter “was lying in wait” before shooting Thompson.
She claimed that even though the suspect was frequently passed, he seemed to wait for his intended victim. “I want to be clear: All the evidence points to this being a targeted, premeditated, and preplanned attack at this time.”
According to Tisch, Thompson was shot at least once in the back and once in the right calf by the shooter who came up behind him. After being transported to Mount Sinai West in serious condition by responding emergency personnel, Thompson was declared dead at 7:12 a.m.
“The New York City Police Department’s investigation is well underway, and we won’t stop until we find and capture the shooter,” Tisch continued.
According to police, the suspect ran away, first on foot and then on an e-bike, and was last saw in Central Park this morning. Investigators are still searching the area.
According to a law enforcement officer, Thompson, who was travelling from Minnesota, was shot with a handgun that looked to be equipped with a silencer. Although the reason behind the shooting is still unknown, Paulette, Thompson’s wife, told NBC News that her husband had received “some threats.”
She told NBC News over the phone, “There had been some threats.” “Basically, a lack of coverage? Is that right? Details are unknown to me. She remarked, “I just know that he mentioned that some people had been threatening him.”
Paulette Thompson told NBC about the threats, but she refused to respond to CNN.
She told CNN on Wednesday, “We are devastated to learn of our beloved Brian’s senseless death.” “Brian was a very talented, kind, and loving man who lived life to the fullest and had a profound impact on many people’s lives. Most importantly, our two sons will miss Brian a lot since he was a very caring parent.
The incident took place in Midtown Manhattan, near the intersection of West 53rd Street and 6th Avenue.
