A chilling video is circulating on the internet of a young woman who was killed by a train shortly after she intentionally climbed down onto the tracks at a subway in New York. Seconds before the 24-year-old woman’s death, she tried to outrun the train but did not make it off the tracks in time.
The footage begins with moments leading up to the tragedy, which happened around 10:20 p.m. on Monday, June 16. Several commuters were present at the 14th Street-Union Square station. Among them was the woman, who was captured descending onto the tracks for reasons not yet confirmed.
Witnesses confirmed seeing her, and some speculated that she had done so to relieve herself. However, that detail has not been officially verified. When the northbound L train neared, she began running towards the platform.
She attempted to pull herself back onto the platform as a train approached, but struggled. The train struck her just before she could reach safety, crushing her body along the platform and carrying her several feet away.
Emergency medical responders arrived quickly but found her unresponsive and pronounced her dead at 10:27 p.m.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) has since launched an investigation. Officials stated there were no signs of criminal activity, and the case is currently being treated as a tragic accident.
The L train line between 8th Avenue and Bedford Avenue was temporarily suspended for nearly three hours following the fatality, as authorities conducted their on-site examination. Service resumed in the early hours of Tuesday morning, though residual delays were reported.
According to reports, while the NYPD initially referred to the train as “northbound”, the L train runs east-west in Manhattan, leaving some confusion about the direction of travel.
The woman’s identity has not yet been made public, as authorities await contact with her family. The haunting video has left many stunned and saddened.
