A man deported from the United States on Thursday was immediately taken into custody upon landing in Jamaica, where he now faces serious charges of having sex with an underage girl.
The accused, 28-year-old Sanjay Walsh, also known as “Sicky”, was intercepted by law enforcement at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston. His arrest was tied to an outstanding warrant issued by the St Mary Police, who had been searching for him for violations under the Sexual Offences Act.
According to reports, the violations occurred between late 2017 and early 2018. At the time, Walsh allegedly had an intimate relationship with a 15-year-old girl in the Highgate area.
According to the victim, she first met Walsh in 2016, and over time, the relationship turned sexual. Reports say that during the two-month span in question, they were intimate on several occasions.
The matter had been under investigation for several years, and a report filed by the complainant, who is now 23 years old, eventually led to the issuing of a warrant for Walsh’s arrest.
Meanwhile, Walsh was reportedly committing similar offences in the United States, leading him to be a convicted sex offender. Walsh was arrested for reportedly being intimate with two children. He was found later guilty of sexually assaulting both minors and tampering with evidence when he went to court in Connecticut in June 2023.
Though initially sentenced to 10 years, his time behind bars was significantly reduced, and he served just under two years. As part of the ruling, he was placed on the sex offender registry for a decade after his release.
In December of that year, U.S. immigration authorities detained him, leading to Thursday’s deportation.
Now in Jamaican custody, Walsh awaits his first court appearance as investigations into the local allegations continue. Police have not disclosed whether additional charges will be brought forward.
