Dancehall artiste Mavado has released a new song expressing his feelings about the corruption in the countries following his son’s release from incarceration and his own legal issues. The song, titled God Nah Sleep, is a conscious track that focuses on social and political issues. The single, produced by Chimney Records and Mansion Records, was released on April 17.
The song touches on racism, prejudice based on background and corruption within the justice system. While giving a voice to those who feel trapped and overlooked by society, he urges people to “travel with faith” as they navigate through this unfair world.
In the song, he seems to address the government’s abuse of power and failure to take care of citizens, particularly regarding essential services like proper healthcare facilities and educational opportunities. He issues a stern warning to the government, the police, and gunmen that God is watching keenly, indicating that their actions will garner severe repercussions.
The imagery accompanying the song depicts the day his son walked out of prison as a freeman after his conviction was overturned, as well as Vybz Kartel’s release from incarceration. The other scenes include photos of his family, ICE hunting down illegal immigrants in the United States, and children playing in the streets.
He can also be seen singing in America, where he resides, and apparently at the “Gully Side” in Jamaica, where his camp dominated. There were speculations regarding him recently visiting Jamaica after he shared a post showing he was at the location. Online users questioned the risk of visiting when the arrest warrant issued for him in 2018 remains active.
God Nah Sleep has been well-received, with many praising its powerful message of accountability and justice. Fans are also pleased to see unity in dancehall, which is portrayed through the scene of Vybz Kartel, who was once Mavado’s competitor in the early 2000s when they clashed lyrically and feuded.
