A Delta Air Lines flight crashed and started blazing when it was attempting to land. The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. ET on Monday, which was windy. The plane, travelling from Minneapolis, was attempting to land at Toronto Pearson International Airport, which had experienced heavy snowfall. The plane crashed and flipped upside down on the runway.
The flight was carrying 80 passengers, and all survived the crash. However, 21 passengers sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals, according to the airline. A report shared that two of the passengers were still at the hospital Tuesday morning while the other passengers were released.
Videos of the CRJ900 twin-jet aircraft have gone viral, including a video of it crashing. The plane can be seen skidding on its belly before it flips over. The right-wing caught fire after the plane crash-landed on the runway.
Another footage shows passengers being quickly assisted out of the upside-down plane.
One passenger told CNN that it was amazing they survived while recalling that the plane landed “super hard” and went sideways. According to CNN, the plane was missing its right wing, and the left wing was destroyed when the crash site was visited Tuesday afternoon.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian released a statement, expressing empathy to those involved in the incident and gratitude to those who leapt into action and assisted. “The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected by today’s incident at Toronto-Pearson International Airport. I want to express my thanks to the many Delta and Endeavour team members and the first responders on site,” he said.
There have been a string of frightening plane crashes since December. One of the incidents involved a regional airline crash in Alaska that claimed the lives of 10 people in early February. Another crash in Washington, DC, involved an American Airlines plane that collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter in the air, killing 67 passengers in late January.
