A birthday trip turned traumatic for one Florida family after a 21-year-old man was struck by a car while using a crosswalk in Midtown Nashville. Zachary Carach was crossing Church Street when a white Mitsubishi Mirage sped through the intersection and hit him, then drove off without stopping.
Surveillance video captured the moment of impact, showing Carach walking with the signal and in the marked crosswalk. The circulating footage shows the vehicle not slowing down at all before the collision.
Zachary was brought to the Vanderbilt University Medical Centre for immediate treatment. While not life-threatening, his wounds were deemed to be serious and have left him in significant pain. His mother, Sheena Carach, watched the crash happen.
Sheena explained that her son was careful when crossing the street, as he checked both directions and started walking along the crosswalk when the light started to flash, signalling pedestrians to go and drivers to stop. However, the driver did not hit the brakes and drove into him.
Sheena ran to her son’s side moments after the collision. She said the impact sent him flying into the air, and he landed on his shoulder. When she saw him lying in the road, she began praying, begging God to spare her child.’”
She’s now speaking out, not just as a mother but as someone who once worked in law enforcement. Along with being upset with the driver, her frustration is also aimed at the lack of camera resources that could have helped identify the driver.
The family has decided to stay in Nashville while Zachary undergoes treatment and surgery. They’re also holding out hope that someone will come forward with information or that the driver will do the right thing.
“You drove away and left my child in the road like a piece of garbage, and that’s not ok,” Sheena said, adding that she will fight for her children. Police are still looking for the white Mitsubishi Mirage involved in the hit-and-run. They believe the vehicle sustained damage to the passenger-side front end.
