Footage has emerged showing the shocking moment a 68-year-old woman was struck by a train as she attempted to run across the tracks in the central area of Carandaí, Brazil. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 2.
The disturbing surveillance video reveals the woman walking along the side of the road and turning in the direction of the railway crossing. She quickly walks past a nearby flagman and ignores his signals as she suddenly darts toward the train tracks. Just as she begins to cross, a train approaches at speed.
The flagman, stationed to ensure a clear path for the train, is seen reacting in alarm, raising his hand in a warning gesture. He was apparently attempting to stop her, but when he realised it was too late, he quickly diverted his eyes as the train made an impact. When the train collides with the woman, she is thrown to the ground and it makes impact with her again.
In the moments following the incident, the flagman and two nearby individuals rushed to check on the woman. Emergency services from SAMU arrived shortly after to render assistance. Despite the intensity of the collision, the woman sustained only minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Her identity has not been made public.
Military Police officers also responded to the scene and took control of traffic in the area, as well as recorded the details of the event. According to KrudPlug, witnesses say the woman appeared to have misjudged the timing of the train’s arrival, apparently believing she had enough time to cross.
In response to the accident, authorities have since reiterated the dangers of ignoring safety signals and attempting to beat oncoming trains, especially at crossings that remain open to foot traffic. Officials continue to remind residents to use extreme caution around railway lines.
