Racism is a global issue, and incidents of racist acts are regularly filmed and shared online. A video shared on March 4 captured a physical altercation that allegedly stemmed from racism. The video, which garnered over 3 million views on X, shows a white man being beaten by a group of Black men employed at a gas station. The altercation occurred at night in a foreign country.
The brief details accompanying the video informed the public that the white man used a disrespectful racial slur that led to him being beaten by the gas station workers. “White man called one of he petrol attendants “a monkey” and found out,” the post read.
In the video, the gas station attendants can be seen using sticks and a thick piece of board to repeatedly strike the white man. The white man attempts to fight them off and also runs around. A vehicle is also seen slowly driving away in the video, and it is unclear if the man came in the vehicle as he held to the driver’s side of the moving car at one point.
He was also almost run over by the vehicle while attempting to avoid coming in contact with the weapons that the men were using to flog him. It is alleged that the person attempting to drive away is the man’s wife. At the end of the 30-second-long video, it appears that the retaliation concludes with the workers arguing with the man who can be seen limping.
The video, which attracted over 48,000 likes, garnered mixed responses. While most viewers sided with the workers, others expressed that physical violence was not the answer.
One viewer wrote, “Verbal abuse is wrong; but physical abuse is even worse. Two wrongs can’t make a right. Humanity comes first before colour. If that man was black, I doubt if we will justify that kind of physical abuse as a commensurate punishment for a verbal abuse. Let’s call a spade a spade.”
Another viewer said, “Body go tell am today! How can you call a human being a monkey? He deserves the beating… I’m sure he wasn’t expecting that at all. Please tell us the country that this happened.”
