A distraught mother is seeking answers from Spanish Town Hospital after her 14-year-old daughter passed away during childbirth. The mother shared her heartbreaking story on the social media platform TikTok through tears.
Under the handle @Maamz66, the woman indicated that her teenage daughter suffered greatly before she died due to the negligence of the doctors. The young teen mom, known as Shay, reportedly died on Tuesday at Spanish Town Hospital in St. Catherine. Shay was a student at The Queen’s School, an all-girl High School located in Kingston.
According to the wailing mother, she requested the doctors to perform a C-section and signed documents authorising the procedure. However, despite her pleading with the medical professionals, her daughter was forced to have a natural childbirth. The mother explained that her daughter’s developing body could not manage to push out a baby.
“Di doctor dem dung a Spanish Town Hospital, dem mek mi baby push…me sign the paper fi seh unuh please unuh cut me baby,” she said between her tears in a video shared on Wednesday. The mother indicated that her daughter was also affected by the recent strike at the hospital.
An official news report detailed that every junior doctor in public health facilities participated in the strike. The strike negatively affected hospitals and health centers in Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, and St. Thomas. Some affected facilities listed in the report included Bustamante Hospital for Children, Spanish Town Hospital, and Princess Margaret Hospital.
“Dem mek a 14-year-old baby weh inna deep distress go through a long, hard labour and kill her,” the mother said.
Additionally, the mother explained that she pleaded with the doctors to get a referral to transfer her daughter to a different health facility, but she did not receive one.
“Unuh mek mi baby dead, unuh mek she mash up,” the grieving mother continued. “Spanish Town, mi wah answer…a mi one baby.” According to the information on the social media platform, Shay’s baby is alive and well.
