A strange incident has led to the death of a 46-year-old man in Belize after he went up against a pig in an attempt to protect his garden. The man was killed by the pig on Sunday afternoon in Gales Point.
The deceased, Anton Andrewin, was reportedly spending time with his friends at his home when the pig entered his yard. When Pig began eating his plants, Andrew attempted to drive the animal away. However, he was attacked and fatally injured.
Anton Andrewin, a father of five, sustained a wound to his leg when the pig became aggressive, per a report. The animal, which was previously known to the family, slashed Andrewin’s leg with its tusk, severing an artery. Despite efforts to get him medical attention, Andrewin was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Belizean Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero confirmed that police are investigating the incident but could not yet say if the pig’s owner might face legal consequences.
Andrew’s wife, Michelle, described the moment she realised something was wrong. “He was coming and the blood was running down…he had on a long pants, the blood was running on his leg,” she said. She added that similar incidents have occurred in the past, in which her husband suffered injuries from the pig.
According to reports, the pig had been wandering around in the village for some time after its owner relocated earlier this year. The abandoned and hungry animal became wild as it tried to find.
Village chairman Jason Altschaft emphasised the importance of responsible animal ownership, urging owners to secure their animals, as it is illegal for animals to roam freely in public spaces.
Immediately after Andrewin died, the family tried to capture the pig; per report, Altschaft learnt that the family was chasing the animal and ultimately used his licensed firearm to euthanise it. The dead pig was later burned, leaving charred remains behind.
