A man was hurled from a moving train and beaten on Sunday in Bogura, Bangladesh. A video of him clinging to the train before falling underneath has gone viral. Fortunately, he returned to his residence in Paril village, Raninagar upazila of Naogaon, on Monday evening following medical treatment for serious injuries.
Forty-year-old Matiur Rahman had been hospitalised after the shocking ordeal at Nasratpur railway station in Adamdighi upazila.
According to a report, Matiur, a former auto-rickshaw driver, was thrown from a train following issues in his current business of arranging overseas work visas. He was on a northbound train when a dispute over travel documents turned violent. His son, Ahsan Habib, explained that Matiur had assisted a young man named Sajeeb Hossain in securing passage to Saudi Arabia for 470,000 taka. Delays in processing the paperwork led to threats from Sajeeb’s family.
“On the day of the incident, when they found their father alone on the train, Sajeeb’s brother Rakib and his brothers-in-law accused him of being a thief and pushed him away,” Ahsan told Ajker newspaper. “They also snatched the 50,000 taka he had.”
A surveillance video shared online captured Matiur clinging to the train door, his feet hitting the pavement while he tried to avoid being struck by oncoming obstacles. He eventually fell under the train near the platform at Nasratpur station. Bystanders, believing him to be a robber, struck him repeatedly as he lay wounded. He was taken to Adamdighi Upazila Health Complex with injuries to his chest, head, and legs.
Despite repeated attempts, Sajeeb’s brother Rakib did not respond to calls for clarification, per the report. However, their father, Mohammad Helal, insisted the threats were unfounded and said he did not know the details of the train incident.
Ahsan also criticised delays in police action. “When I went to Adamdighi police station to file a complaint after the incident, they referred the matter to Santahar Railway Police. That day, Santahar Railway Police was also avoiding the matter. However, after the incident went viral, Santahar Railway Police have taken a complaint today. I want punishment for everyone involved in this incident,” he said.
According to the report, Officer-in-Charge Mostafizur Rahman of Adamdighi Police Station confirmed the issue fell under railway jurisdiction. Santahar Railway Police OC Habibur Rahman Habib confirmed a complaint had now been filed and that officers were actively investigating. “We hope the accused will be arrested soon,” he said.
