Two Jamaican fishermen were lost at sea for more than a month before they were finally found on Thursday. The fishermen went missing in October and spent 35 days drifting in the sea.
An extensive search was launched by the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) to find and rescue the missing fishermen. JDF also reached out to a number of seafarers and persons in the Cayman Islands, Haiti, Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala to be on alert for the missing fishermen and their boat. The men were ultimately found by the Honduran authorities.
It was reported that one of the men was discovered dead when they located the boat. The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) informed the media about the deceased fisherman. The Jamaica Defence Force also shared with the Jamaica Star that the families of the fishermen were informed about the status of the men.
According to the news outlet, the JDF is currently coordinating with the authorities of Honduras in the repatriation efforts.
All marine stakeholders are also reminded by the JDF that overdue or distressed vessels can be reported to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at (876) 967-8193, as per the report.
