A massive haul of pipe bombs has rocked the parish of St Thomas, where police arrested three men in connection with the discovery of over 500 explosives on Monday. This marks the second major seizure in the Bull Bay area since April, intensifying concerns about escalating violence between rival factions in the volatile 10- and 11-Mile communities.
According to the police, the men captured are believed to be part of warring groups preparing for serious conflict. “These men are reportedly bent on going at each other’s throats,” the police said, pointing to a growing trend of tactical weapon stockpiling.
The operation unfolded around 10:00 a.m. on the border of the feuding districts, where law enforcement uncovered the explosives at a premises suspected of being used to store weapons.
According to the Jamaica Gleaner, the men tried to evade capture by hiding in nearby bushes but were quickly tracked down and taken into custody.
What is more alarming to some is the discovery’s eerie similarity to a previous bust just months ago, where approximately 900 similar bombs were seized in the same region. Authorities believe the explosives were imported and distributed locally in preparation for violent confrontations.
While the investigation continues, the public has erupted with reactions online. Some social media users expressed shock, while others raised suspicions of political motives, especially with Jamaica’s general elections approaching. “Election bomb dem yaaa.”
Others called for swift and harsh punishment. “Lock dem up, no bail… terrorism charge!” a commenter wrote. Another suggested, “Everyone of those pipe [bombs], 60 years per piece.”
Another commenter said, “Hope this is not politically motivated.” There were also nervous comments about Jamaica turning into a war zone, comparing the situation to the Middle East and demanding stronger legislation to treat such acts as terrorism.
